Glaucoma Information

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that affect the optic nerve. It is the leading cause of blindness in the United States, and can affect people of any age. It is sometimes called the silent thief because the disease can slowly steal your sight without any symptoms.

Glaucoma Causes

Glaucoma is caused by elevated eye, or intraocular, pressure (IOP). IOP increases because of problems relating to the eye’s drainage angle, preventing proper drainage of eye fluid. Problems with the drainage angle can result from structural defects, nutritional deficiencies, aging, genetics, or another medical condition. Increased pressure causes damage to the optic nerve, resulting in vision loss.

Glaucoma Treatment

There is no cure for glaucoma, but the condition can be treated with medication or surgery to slow or halt progression. Oral and topical medications aim to lower intraocular pressure by reducing fluid production or increasing the outflow of fluid in the eye. If medication fails, glaucoma surgery may be necessary.
